recent avatar edits + photos

Over the summer I haven't really been doing much to my avatars apart from updating their shaders and eventually adding lighting sliders. With September coming to a close, I'm realizing that I've gotten a number of edits out with new clothes for my avatars. It feels nice to be comfortable my virtual body, as it helps me immerse with the virtual reality around me. Being present with my avatar is also helps with communication, as with fullbody tracking I can gesture and even use my outfit to "fit in" to the environment. For example, I could switch to an avatar with a jacket in a winter-themed world, or I could take my shirt off and put on my swim shorts in a beach world.

My newest addition to my avatar edits has been one for Velle. I thought I would never come back to editing this base because every time I wore it places people would unfortunately misgender me. It felt really bad. But I think I can get over that this time, like water off a duck's back. If people don't care to use my preferred pronouns in basic communication and conversation, that's a them problem that I don't have to fix. Velle is originally a female base, but I have found that I could get them looking quite androgynous.

The key to getting this base to look this way was to mess around with the face blendshapes for a long time. I opted to raise the eye level and make the eyes as small as I reasonably could, trying to follow proportions. If the eyes were too small I'd probably look pretty silly. I made sure to add my signature tattoos, earrings, and the three moles on my face. This base is also particularly fun because it is the closest to my actual body type: stocky legs and a slightly jiggly stomach. Dancing in this particular avatar is really fun since it matches my tracking really well.

If Velle is the closest to my actual body type, Nakiya's face is the closest to my actual face. I have a rounder nose, and not a lot of bases in VRChat capture that quite well.

Here in this photo above, I have my Nakiya in a maid outfit! He even has a headdress with ribbons... wah. Very bonita.

Nakiya's body, however, is quite slim and lanky. The legs are long, so my tracking is a bit off when I use this edit. That's one thing that's unfortunate with some male avatar bases is that if you're out of the ideal height range, your tracking could be a little janky. Of course, you can also go to Blender and adjust the position and length of the bones in the armature of the avatar to your heart's desire, but for me lately I just want to get into Unity and put my edits out. There are so many more tools now to create avatars compared to when I first started in 2021, so I consider myself quite lucky to be able to create edits now.

The creator of Lasyusha, Keenoo, also made Nakiya, and it's been really cool to see the similarities between the bases when I run into Lasyusha avatar edits in the wild west of virtual reality.

Below is the same Nakiya edit but in the same world (Arch by Brikaro) but in slightly different lighting.

I love the harsh line between shadow and light here. Also somehow I'm looking really secretive and suspicious here! What an example of side-eye.

In terms of what base I tend to use the most, that would have to go to Hanka.

This outfit was recommended to me by my friend darling Fray, and it originally comes with a huge cape that hangs from my shoulders. But unfortunately, the meshes are really high poly, so I opted to make an edit with only part of the outfit on. The belt straps are my favorite aspect of this outfit. The ones on my legs have knives attached to them! I can't interact with them lol, but they do look cool on my legs.

I try to have some parts of my tattoos shown, so I removed the inner top of the collared shirt. I should try to make an edit that looks more like Leon Kennedy, since I got told that the outfit looks similar to his. I genuinely think it's just the belt straps, and maybe that's another reason to like them so much haha. It would probably be a lot more accurate if there was a gun strapped to one of my legs instead of the knives. Last year, I made an actual Leon Kennedy edit but lost the files due to my drive breaking down. I'm still bitter about losing all those avatar projects, but that's my lesson for not creating backups upon backups for all of them.
