the sort of music that i like

T E C H N O

i got into techno thru D.Dan, a dj from seattle who specialized in fast, hypnotic yet groovy techno. i was first recommended his sets from a channel called HOR Berlin, and then eventually i started digging for more of his sets and sound from other places.

after initially listening to D.Dan, i started finding other artists and djs such as Sama Abdulhadi, Juan Atkins, Ned Bennett, and Chlar. after awhile i started realizing that the sound that i resonated with the most came from Detroit, the birthplace of techno. Juan Atkins, someone who was part of the Belleville Three, became a central pillar of inspiration for me as his numerous sessions with Tresor Records and his boiler room set from more than a decade earlier pushed me into a sub-category of techno that was groovy, funky, and weird. most people would only really associate the harsh industrial sounds with techno nowadays, but hardgroove to me is where techno is the most fun.

while Ben Sims is the man behind hardgroove's original sound and naming, the influence of the Detroit sound - and specifically Jeff Mills contributions to Detroit techno - can be felt in 'The Loops (A1)'. the return to "funk" is definitely not new, but what makes this genre special to me is specifically its call to return to the dancefloor. it feels now that music must be enjoyed only in this pretentious, up-tight manner, and thru this kind of music, i wish to rebel that notion.
