JOJI - PISS IN THE WIND
This album hit me the moment that Pixelated Kisses was released. I knew it was going to be one of my top albums of the year from that track alone. Harsh and loud bass contrasted with the softness of Joji's vocals in Pixelated Kisses had me putting that song on repeat during my commutes nearly every day. It is one of the best songs to listen to while going down the freeway. I've begged friends to put it on while in their car just to hear the bass boost through their speakers while we drive. It is also such a fitting song to be the first on the album, setting the tone of the rest of it with the theme of what once was and what has been lost to time, media and distance.
Throughout this album, Joji speaks about the spiral that happens after being unable to receive someone's time, love, and attention. There is a desperation to his lyrics, like "I close my eyes... her face lingers on these walls..." and "If I love you less, will you love me more?" Joji is aware that he is pleading for a lost and broken love, but he still wishes to even just have a piece of it even if just for a moment. He acknowledges in the song Piece of You with Giveon that he cannot be this person's "peace", yet they only give pieces of each other, eluding to a sexual and avoidant relationship. With the premise of the relationship between Joji and this person being that of an estranged type, he expresses the hurt and sorrow that it causes him.
In the songs Soujourn and Fragments, Joji says that this person is "his only vice" that he gives into, that their being gives him a high that he wants to chase, doing things and sharing moments they never speak of. There's a lot of contrast that happens in the album with overall energy between songs. Soujourn is very upbeat, while Fragments with Don Toliver is a bit slower, and is a song that is fit for a drive at night. Honestly, this whole album is a really great listen for drives.
